I honestly don’t have much advice beyond making sure your daughter understands she’s in no way guilty or responsible. Explain that sometimes those with the most damaged morals are the most adept at disguising it, because someone in her shoes might be thinking “I should have noticed something” or “If only I’d been more (x,y,z) maybe he wouldn’t have …” so help her stop those thoughts.

It’s a common response, but not a warranted one. There’s a reason why those who know the people who do these kinds of crimes usually fail to foresee it. It’s rare for anyone acquainted with a mass killer to say, “Oh, yeah, I knew that asshole would snap one day and kill a bunch of people.”

I think if you’re really a violently-inclined sociopath, you learn really early to hide those thoughts and feelings, and how to appear normal.
