I saw an opinion piece yesterday that reminded me of the last time a long hard look was taken at the FBI and NSA. The Church committee. The argument for a similar public review is clearly called for. Back then the committee issued a warning about the NSA that reads prescient today.

Communications technology is not going to go away, and it is not going to bring tyranny to America. Electing candidates who lack the intelligence and moral direction to use technology properly will.

We cannot uninvent the NSA. We can vote to control it, and even then we will never know for certain that it is effectively controlled. That’s the price of Netflix On Demand and a lot of Twitter followers.
