Check this out - I just found out a few years ago “red Indian” is still current in India on the exceedingly rare occasion that natives of India, speaking educated, patrician British English, must refer to American Indians. When I was in Oklahoma (chock full of our Indians) I got to meet the retired parents of an Indian friend (from Goa, India). “Red Indian” was the mot juste.
