I did a half thought there. Sorry.I know people who can read sheet music but can’t execute what is needed to perform, even in a studio. And I know those who just have “an ear” and can stand in front of crowds and “wow” them.

I’ve known musicians who can sight-read effortlessly and sound amazing doing it, but if you take away their sheet music and ask them to improvise they’re completely lost.

I fall more into your second category - I’ve got enough of an ear that it kept me in work for a good part of my adult life, but if you ask me to do a strict reading of sheet music I sound like I’ve got ten thumbs.
