And really, from what I’ve read and the photos I’ve seen, the two inches of snow (or whatever the amount was) wasn’t the major factor.
It was that there was ICE on the roads, substantially enough ice to cause problems under usually traffic conditions but then to tell everybody GO HOME NOW! GO GET YOUR KIDS FROM SCHOOL! and whatever other hysteria-mongering was happening…
Well, all of a sudden it seems as if just about anyone in the Atlanta metro area with a vehicle jumped into said vehicles and completely overwhelmed the traffic routes.
Best thing would have been to tell people to just sit tight, let the road crews do their thing. And most of all, just be honest about what is happening.

What happened here was that a layer of ice went down on the roads first (it was in the teens) and the fine snow got packed down on it as people drove, making the road actually slicker. My neighbor works at Dillard’s dept store and was made to stay on her shift until 6 pm and said by that time, the roads were treacherous—took her 10 times as long to traverse I-85 and she felt lucky at that. She was highly pissed that the dept mgrs left before anyone did, and those who closed the store were expected to stay. I’ve never worked anywhere that happened. Luckily, she was off Wed & Thurs or they would have expected her at work. Yeah, like everyone was going shopping in that shit.

My son said Charlotte had over 500 accidents and the main roads there were brined, salted and plowed.
