“Bitterness” is not the best word I could have used. I think what is really unique about this political era is the ever greater dissociation of the Republican party from reality.

That is completely without precedent, as far as I know.

I would say it was even worse among the slave owning class, who convinced themselves that keeping millions of people as chattel was actually good for them. Similar to Paul Ryan convincing himself that leaving people utterly destitute is good for them, only more evil.
