Iran is in Iraq now, apparently Quds Force has been invited by Maliki. So our options are to stay out of it entirely and risk Bagdad falling, to coordinate our air assets with Iran if for no other reason than that we don’t bomb them inadvertently and worsen relations with them at a time when our goals are aligned.

If we get involved at all there’s going to be some necessary amount of cooperation at play.

That’s why I’m becoming increasingly convinced Obama’s best option is to stay out of it at this point. Maybe a couple months ago when the Iraqis first asked it might have been a good idea but now Iran has been invited in. They’ll be able to keep Iraq from falling but Obama really doesn’t want to put himself in the position of using our military to advance Iranian regional influence.
