Cousin works for the TSA now so he needs “Word” the Federal government (or at least his branch) does not except documents in any other format. As I said in my original post the manufacturer will not even sell me back-up disks for the original programs because the warranty has expired (thanks Microsoft, thanks a lot :p).

Buying a new copy of Office 2010 makes no sense either because for that price you could get it bundled for free with a brand new computer. It seems I really don’t have any viable options here…

IIRC, OpenOffice outputs in Word format. Also, our Army staff element had a group license for any software they wanted us to use on our home machines—see if TSA has one for word processing (totally unclassified stuff, right?).
