Speaking of Snopes, this is why we can’t have nice things anymore:
Katy Skid
A middle school student in Katy, Texas, claimed her teacher insisted she deny the existence of God; but the assignment in question was taken far out of context in media reports. […]http://www.snopes.com/2015/10/28/katy-texas-god-assignment-controversy/
The teacher didn’t do any such thing, she was trying to teach the kids critical thinking skills (the horror!) and asked them to classify several statements as a factual claims, assertions, or opinions. One of those statements was “There is a God.”
Naturally, this was taken out of context. The student clearly didn’t understand the assignment and I’m gonna guess the parents must’ve gone ballistic without fact checking anything (no doubt fearing some of that awful Christian persecution) and called the media, who made it even worse because… clickbait!
Sadly, both school and teacher were cowed by the outrage and as a result ungraded assignment was deemed “ill-conceived” and blamed for the girl’s inability to understand it. Therefore “the activity will no longer be used by the school, and the teacher has been advised and appropriate personnel action will be taken.”
This was part of graded assignment and #katy middle schooler says she was told she had to say God wasn’t real #khou pic.twitter.com/5EQ5EnSYi7
