Many of those churches date from a time when Spain was the richest nation in Europe, swimming in gold “re-purposed” from New World pagan temples.

As a young, leftist, idealist, those images really made a powerful impression on me. The juxtaposition of the Chuch’s wealth upon the peasant villages was breathtakingly disturbing.
