I saw nothing about the families having “owned the houses for 50 years” in the linked-to article. But if they did “own the houses for 50 years,” that would put their acquisition of the houses during the 19 years of illegal Arab occupation of East Jerusalem, during the period when all the Jews living in East Jerusalem were killed or exiled and their property expropriated by the Jordanians.

So it is entirely possible that what is being described as “ownership for 50 years” is, in fact, an instance of people living in expropriated plunder.
