An important difference between the US and every European country (UK included) is that they have real public transportation and train service. We don’t. Amtrak barely exists and trying to get even from one side of a large city to another without your own car is hellish.

On the other hand, when I was in the army, I could take the train from Bad Windsheim to Munich, use the busses and trams all weekend and get back on time for Monday formation on the train for pennies. Much more difficult and expensive in Madison Wisconsin.
