Or the F-16 and F-18. The key I think is to evolve from a previous design. To build upon a proven platform and not to reinvent the wheel as much as they did with the F-35.

In their defense, the F-16 and the F/A-18 were rather radical departures from the trend of building bigger, heavier fighters, the culmination of which were the F-14 and F-15. But they weren’t nearly as radical as the F-35, or even the F-22.
