re: #241 Decatur Deb

Our small (75,000) Deep South town is atypical. A former mayor and a few old families are Lebanese Christians. Our small Reform Temple is 77 yrs old. (It recently started a program of economic subsidies to bring young Jewish families to their aging congregation.) There is one Catholic church, with an Irish immigrant pastor.

This is similar to the town where I grew up, only we had 3 Catholic churches.

But all the groups you mentioned, there, active in local affairs and politics, along with others you didn’t mention.

I’m not sure how atypical it is. It certainly isn’t the norm, but not completely unheard of. May I introduce Kaplan, Louisiana, the “gateway to Acadiana” named for its founder, Mr. Abrom Kaplan, neither Catholic nor Cajun.
