re: #250 Killgore Trout

The tall growth is ideal for me. I’ve been trying to think of a food crop I can grow on my parking strip area but the neighborhood dogs shit on everything under two feet tall. I’m looking forward to trying it.

Well to give you an idea of what is possible, if it does grow okay where you are I was reading a blog where a woman tried a few plants. She ended up getting about 1 and 1/2 pounds from 5 plants. That’s quite a bit.

The drawback is while you don’t have to thresh it like other true grains you have to wash it really well. It has saponins on the outside which make it really bitter. However the bitterness apparently keeps birds from eating the seeds which can be a problem with small scale grain growing. I planted some amaranth one year and barely got any seed because of the birds. I think it’s a pretty good trade-off.
