It’s hard to find a barrier between “raised to be..” and “brainwashed to be..”. I raised 4 kids to be liberal Democrats. None of them would consider voting for a Republican.

My parents weren’t good at brainwashing. My mother in particular was a dyed in the wool Democrat.

My response was to join the Goldwater campaign when I was 15. My mom was a delegate to the ‘68 Dem convention in Chicago and that is how I got to witness the infamous police riot in person. The folks had thought the trip would win me back from my wayward Republican ways. It did just the opposite, needless to say. I did not fully recover for 40 years, though I started having doubts during the Reagan administration.
