The best class I ever took in high school was typing. It would be years before I ever did any real typing but the mechanics were still there. My wife wanted to do it in her high school but they had no typing class. It was a foofy high school and they assumed their grads would have secretaries to do the typing for them.
Say what you want about QWERTY, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s good enough. I also don’t understand what the typewriter origins have to do with the criticism. If the layout was intended to keep the letters from jamming, one would think it would also keep your fingers from interfering with each other also.

One of my uncles, who works as a Director of Emergency Medicine at a hospital, said the only class that ended up being worthwhile for him in high school was typing. :)
