I don’t think Jefferson envisaged a day when the world would look to America for international ass-kicking and redecorating. I think he considered it a good run if America came out as England’s equal.
He also would not imagine America dependent on feudal monarchies for its vital resources. he had this notion of self-sufficient citizens in a self-sufficient country.
That was the basic premise behind the sort of freedoms he advocated. Once we toss out the self-sufficiency, we have to open ourself to compromises, a lot of shich are often rather unsavory.
