But with Iran close to getting the bomb, it is getting close to failure.

Of course, what prevented WWIII so far has been the rationality of the Soviet leadership, at least in the sense that they realized they wouldn’t want to rule over a radioactive wasteland, and MAD.
I don’t think this works for Iran.
