We abandoned all those airheaded post-embargo notions of fuel economy or alternative sources and allowed ourselves to believe it could go on like that forever.

Exactly. And we will pay dearly for it, because the US population is too fucking fat, happy, and stupid to connect the dots and realize we need to take serious action yesterday to disentangle ourselves from our dependency on middle eastern oil in particular, and oil in general.
