False equivalency. There was no “Bill Ayers / Jeremiah Wright mess”. Those were manufactured outrages from the GOP/Fox “news”.

True or false, it could have been fatal. The RW overplayed it, and the Obama campaign put the right amount of daylight between the candidate and the damaging preacher.
