Folks like being able to control their ships, move them in ways that maximize their firepower/shielding/etc while minimizing that of their enemy, and so forth. Turning it into a rail shooter, where the challenge is just shooting the bad guys fast enough that they don’t shoot you, takes all the fun out of space combat.
Huh? A rail shooter just means you don’t control the path you take (Well, not directly). It basically means any 3D shooter environment without full control. For example, Star Fox and non-free range levels in Star Fox 64.
