We can ignore the worst critics, they are always wrong. The natural consequence of a more measured military policy was sure to be challenged by those who seek to fill any vacuum real or merely perceived. That does not make the policy wrong. I think it was a foregone conclusion that Russia would back Assad at least as strongly as we have seen. I think Putin will cheerfully escalate. Should we push back hard enough to change that equation? Maybe not as the gain hardly fits the risks.
I agree; it’s not worth it.
Mind you, the Turks, the Saudis and the Gulf States are gonna hit the ceiling if that comes to pass.
