My former factory manager is/was a deer hunter. He never fired a shot (yet). As he explained it you were expected to have a good shot at the deer before you fired. You didn’t know if anybody was beyond the deer. If you fired and missed you could expect a long and loud ride home.

Also, if you do shoot and kill the deer you’ve got a godawful amount of messy work ahead of you.
