Lies. It was deliberate. This is one of the consequences of people who bitch about children in public spaces being too loud or fussy. Parents leave them in places where they can be injured or killed instead.

I lived in fear that my wife or I might leave one of the kids in the car.

We were zombies from lack of sleep. These stories always make me sad.
