Mostly, the “republic not a democracy” arguments I’ve seen publicized stem almost entirely from the RW: it’s a handy rhetorical crutch for ideologues/extremists/elitists to try to ignore actual popular opinion on things.

Yet they think basic civil rights i.e. marriage rights, who can screw who, etc should be up to the voters.
