It’s not Newt’s idea. It’s Elections 101. Mitt’s running for POTUS, not dog catcher. It helps to actually tell people what you stand for and what you intend to do if you’re elected. He hasn’t done that and shows no signs of actually doing it anytime soon, and it’s less than two months until the election.

The RNC should have been the big showcase. Romney and Ryan should have laid out a specific agenda that they were going to implement once elected. The speeches that entire week should have embraced that agenda and defended it from start to finish. Just look at the DNC — every speech was about some policy or some agenda piece that Biden and Obama are running on, and they spent all week drawing clear, unambiguous contrasts between the Democratic and Republican visions for the country.

At this point, it’s too late to start laying out an agenda. That should have happened months ago.

No, its not too late. But Mitt will need guys like Newt and Ralph Reed to go around to people who lead organizations within the Republican base and explain Romney’s debate strategy. They need to be told that he’s not going to ignore them, but they need to let him lay out some policy guidelines on economics. They need to be told that if they want the GOP in the White House they’re going to need to defend Romney to the followers.
