my guess:
the R’s keep hacking at this to build it up to: even if it is nonsense, the president honestly, firmly, and sincerely believed it and that’s why…..

whether he’d let himself look like an idiot to the rest of the world…
and yes i know it doesnt matter what he believed etc
and it still wasnt official US policy through official US channels
