Breastfeeding was one of those basic mothering skills that was passed down to women by members of the family or the clan. It is not a basic instinctive thing, although the basic equipment and reflexes are there, it has to be learned in order to be effective.

As it died out in the 2nd has of the XXth century with the advent of bottles and formula, a lot of women who would like to breastfeed need basic assistance on how to go about it.
