It seems even the various authors and authorities have the same debate we are having.
The terms are used ambiguously and are frequently substituded one for the other.

Wiki is subject to peeps changing reality. Try the dictionary, or even Jane’s…..an AUTO weapon fires continually while triggered, a semi auto weapon is 1 shot per trigger pull. The M16 has a semi, 3 shot, and auto select lever-most MSM posts/articles about AUTO WEAPONS being used really are discussing an automatic pistol/rifle which is actually a SEMI-AUTOMATIC, and LEGAL….but then when a cop shoots a bad guy it’s listed by the MFM as part of the stats on gun violence, and why guns MUST be banned…..:>((
