You click the green button once to make it go away and then click the green button again to make it an upding.

That’s strange. I’ve given the occasional accidental downding in the past, and when I clicked the green ‘plus’ it didn’t appear to remove the downding, it just showed both and upding and a downding from me. Maybe clicking the second time is the charm.
