That hypothesis discounts the role of more advanced technology (i.e., both easier and less expensive space flight) and a more hostile social environment in the future.

I tend to agree with Hawking. If we want to be around for the long haul, we (humanity) need to be in more than one place.

All it takes is one, big asteroid and BOOM!
No more humans.
