Isn’t the problem that the gas tax has not kept up with inflation? Like the sales tax, the gas tax is a regressive tax — but it can be worse than the sales tax. After all, in general, people who are less affluent find themselves with vehicles that have worse mileage, and therefore are likely to be purchasing more gasoline and therefore contributing disproportionately more to repair roads

To transition to electrics, kill both the gas tax and harsh registration fee. Tax vehicles for road use based on actual recorded mileage, ideally with a weight multiplier to compensate for the increased wear caused by things like Kentucky’s overweight coal trucks.
