What I see happening is that the Creationist/ID’ers are taking over; and the voice of moderates is being marginalized, so even if the moderates are not officially kicked out, they are effectively kicked out as they have less and less influence.

This is not an unexpected result in an election that took a huge lurch into moonbat land. People on the social right feel threatened and they respond by shoving back. It’s way too early to be panicking and debating ideological purges. The party will probably lurch further right than desired for the 2010 election, particularly in the South. That doesn’t mean it will stay there.
