She was not his first choice, but Joseph Liebermann, was both an independent ex-democrat and Jewish, that would never have flown with the right wing of the party.
Which I think it a lot of ways sums up the man’s career in recent decades: Opportunism. The man forever has his finger in the air, following the polls rather than trying to influence them. There’s not a policy or ideal today that he’s held onto longer that it took for it to become unpopular.
