The difference here is, in my example, killing the guy won’t make you win. In fact, your example is the opposite of mine. Applying my example to Germany would be the fervent nazi who for whatever reason never actually fought or did anything during or after the war.

Applying your rules to my example would be the person that doesn’t hate Israel but somehow gets roped into attacking it anyways. They’re completely different.

That is a moral difference that allows me to feel even more sorry for him when the tactical reality demands his death.
