Some guys started carrying around copies of the relevant statute and showing it to the station attendants so that they could pump their own diesel. It helps that there’s a valid concern - putting diesel in a gasoline car will make it run crappy and probably stall out, but do no damage; putting gas in a diesel car will wreck the fuel pump, and that’s a several-thousand-dollar repair.
