Sherman and Grant were the only Union Generals who understood modern total warfare.

A big part of the reason most of the other Union Generals got fired and were replaced in their theaters by Sherman and Grant.

Oddly enough, pre-Civil War, both had been basically been considered by their peers as having failed in their military careers.
