re: #279 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

People need to understand that genocide isn’t something you should trivialize. For example, in Italy, France, Hungary, and many other places in Europe, the murders of Roma often go mostly uninvestigated, the disappearance of Roma almost always go uninvestigated. There is a huge amount of abuse and oppression of the Roma, but there isn’t genocide. There is a long, long distance between oppressing a population and committing genocide against them.

For a long time in the US, murders of black men and women were barely investigated and the white murderers were often let off by all-white juries. This, too, did not mean that we were committing genocide against African-Americans.

Well, forcing those you buy and sell as slaves to adhere to the owners’ culture actually is a kind of genocide—cultural genocide. We’ve seen that over and over again, also, where natives have also been captured by colonialists and imperialists. It leaves a terrible legacy.
