My house in the Appalachian backwoods is pre-Civil War era and “next door” is a vacant house more than a football field length away with tons of trees in between.
Somebody is breaking into my house and threatening me? Shotgun is my preference for the same reasons as yours.

I live in an 1870s farmhouse on a dirt road with few neighbors only five miles from the center of a major college town and have never locked my doors in coming on 30 years of living there this August. Haven’t used my rifle once and no one has ever broken in. Hmm.
