And you could levy many of the same charges Frank and others have above against it as they have against Roseanne, yet AitF is seen as a cultural touchstone of the 70s. It certain helps that Lear, O’Connor, Struthers, and Reiner were very active liberals, as Gilbert, Goodman, and much of the principal cast of Roseanne are/tend to be, but the X-factor that just couldn’t be negated was Roseanne herself.
Carroll O’Connor wasn’t a bigot, he just played one on TV.
Rosanne Barr is a bigot and played one on TV.
The first was a comedy and the second was a documentary.
