Great children’s novel turned into an overlong, ultimately not-too-great movie. Which is a shame, when you consider the talent involved, from Dick Van Dyke to Sally Ann Howe, Lionel Jeffries, and even Benny Hill in a rare movie role’. It could have been cut from two-and-a third hours to a little over an hour and a half and been much improved.
