I’ve got a lot of students here in China who hope to be translators. How did you get your start?
I worked for a company that did a lot of business between the UK, Germany and Russia, I just got stuck translating stuff. Translation is not a regulated trade in Germany, anyone can slip in, but it is almost all free-lance.
You need to specialize in something that is in demand, a legal/technical/financial background will get you tons of well paid work.
Most of what I do is focused on wine and tourism, as I live in the Rhineland.
