It’s a tactic of authoritarian regimes — disgrace a political opponent or dissident in the public eye with trumped charges to remove their influence. In China the government commonly charges dissidents with tax evasion or the more sinister “disturbing social harmony.” Xi Jinping has added corruption to the list of charges, as his arm of the Party only goes after officials not in his arm of the Party.

The one big difference is that if Avenatti’s wife and her lawyer get him out of jail, I suspect J-cob will need to find an embassy to hide in.
