Exactly. Most modern tanks place the ammo in a bustle behind the turret, but Russia has stuck with the helf-hemispherical turrets it has favored since the T-54/T-55, and they cannot support such an addition.

That said, the T-72s in use by Ukraine are a good deal more advanced than those used by Iraq in 1991. They have better armor, better fire controls, and a more powerful engine. but if they are penetrated they are still vulnerable as all get out to ammo fires.
