Wasn’t til I started asking questions in an effort to put together the beginnings of a family tree that my mother found out that the man she assumed was her father wasn’t.

Damn. That’s crazy. I didn’t find anything like that in mine but I did find that my family has been in the US a lot longer than I thought they were. I had always thought the first people in my family emigrated around the Civil War but it turns out that my great great great grandparents emigrated from Alsace (another shocker since that side was thought to be exclusively Irish) in Washington’s presidency.
