That was less than two years after 9/11, and it wasn’t until 2006 that we found out how bad of a disaster Iraq could be. There’s not going to be great enthusiasm for putting our soldiers in a place where Iran’s proxies can attack them. Moreover, Obama does not belong to the same party as either Bush, and will face greater internal resistance to undertaking a major deployment.
