The US and the world in general has been increasing production of oil for the past few decades to meet increasing energy demand especially in the developing world. Peak Oil (the point at which oil demand starts to fall due to limited production and increased costs) has been promised “ten years from now” for about the same time. It’s like President Trump’s “two weeks”, basically.

It is an outdated technology and an industrial & technological leader like the US should be moving away from it.
