USAir Flight427 (The 737-300 that crashed outside of Pittsburgh in 1994) went into the ground at a 80 degree angle after it stalled due to a rudder malfunction. So you don’t need a pilot to get that dive, just a serious enough malfunction putting the plane out of control. (And depending on the failure the attempted pilot actions could make it worse.)
