Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Sandy’s rearing its ugly mug off the coast of the Carolinas and it’s still a Cat 1 storm, but it’s absolutely huge. It will be churning waters and pushing a huge surge across the East Coast - extended rains, coastal flooding, and inland flooding with sustained winds in excess of tropical storm force winds.

PSEG is already prepositioning equipment in expectation of power losses. They’ve been sending out tweets indicating that they expect that about half of its customers are likely to lose power at some point.

In NYC, they haven’t announced school closures/MTA closures, but they’ll probably make that call tomorrow night. Bloomberg did say that city schools and buses/subways to be working on Monday, but the final decision will be made tomorrow night. I’m thinking that they’re going to be suspending service tomorrow evening because the storm is looking to hit the area squarely on the chin, and that NJ Transit is likely to shut down in large parts of the state.
